Can CBD cause a heart attack?

Cannabidiol, more commonly known as CBD, is a compound present in the cannabis plant and which is attracting growing interest for its numerous therapeutic virtues. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – the other main molecule of the plant responsible for the “psychotropic effects” of cannabis – CBD does not cause euphoria or addiction due to its lack of psychoactive effect. In this context, it is legitimate to wonder about the potential side effects of CBD, particularly regarding its impact on the cardiovascular system. Could consuming CBD cause a heart attack?

The effects of CBD on the heart and blood vessels

Various scientific studies have focused on the cardioprotective properties of CBD and have obtained promising results, both in experimental models (animals, cells) and in humans.

Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties

First of all, the CBD has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. By reducing chronic inflammation and oxidative stress, CBD would have a protective effect on heart cells and blood vessels. Furthermore, it could slow the development of atherosclerosis (atheromas), which is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases.

Effects on blood pressure

Studies have also shown that CBD may cause vasodilation (widening) of blood vessels and a decrease in vascular resistance. As a result, it could help reduce blood pressure in some people with hypertension. On the other hand, during heavy consumption or in combination with THC, certain undesirable effects such as a faster heart rate are likely to appear.

Is CBD dangerous for people with heart conditions?

If the results presented so far seem rather reassuring regarding the effects of CBD on cardiovascular health, the question remains whether this substance is without risk for people suffering from pre-existing heart problems or at high risk.

Drug interaction

It should be noted that CBD may interact with certain medications, in particular medications prescribed in the context of a cardiac pathology. These interactions can potentially lead to a reduction or increase in the action of the affected drugs, thereby changing their effectiveness and/or causing unwanted side effects. It is therefore essential to take into account these possible interactions and to consult a healthcare professional before considering taking CBD in addition to or as a replacement for usual drug treatment.

Other questions to consider

Other points remain to be clarified to determine whether CBD is safe for people with a susceptibility to heart problems:

  • The dosage: It is possible that certain beneficial effects of CBD on heart health are only observed above a certain dose concentration threshold, which could vary greatly from one person to another. Furthermore, individual responses to CBD can also be influenced by genetic factors such as the functional state of the endocannabinoid system.
  • The mode of consumption: The route of administration (oral, sublingual, vaporization, etc.) can also impact the effects of CBD. For example, it is hypothesized that direct inhalation of CBD could cause a sudden increase in blood pressure in some sensitive people.
  • Product quality: As with any other food supplement, the quality and safety of the product are essential to guarantee safe use. There are many CBD products available on the market today, not all of which necessarily meet the required quality standards. It is therefore crucial to check the provenance, extraction methods and laboratory tests carried out on the product in question.

Bottom line: can CBD cause a heart attack?

At present and in view of the scientific data available, it seems unlikely that the consumption of CBD can directly cause a heart attack. On the contrary, some anti-cardiovascular effects have been reported – particularly regarding its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. In addition, this molecule could prove useful for lowering blood pressure in certain people suffering from excessively high blood pressure.

However, it remains essential to take into account several elements when considering the use of CBD in a context of fragile health linked to cardiac pathology or increased risk:

  • L’drug interaction with conventional cardiac treatments should not be underestimated and should be subject to prior consultation with a competent healthcare professional;
  • The choice of dosage and method of consumption also involves a personalized approach, which takes into account the individual response to CBD, its assimilation and its potential effects;
  • Finally, the quality of the product used and compliance with strict standards in terms of extraction and composition are determining elements to ensure safe and effective consumption.
