Coverage of CBD by social security: what you need to know

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound of the cannabis plant that is attracting growing interest for its potential therapeutic benefits. In this article, we are interested in the following question: Is CBD covered by social security in France?

CBD and French legislation

In France, the legislation surrounding CBD is complex. Although this substance comes from cannabis, it does not have the same psychotropic effects as its cousin THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). CBD is therefore not considered a drug.

However, its sale and use are subject to strict controls in France. For a product containing CBD to be legal on the territory, it must meet several criteria:

  • Contain less than 0.2% THC.
  • Come from authorized cannabis varieties.
  • Not be intended for consumption.

In other words, only products made from industrial hemp – a variety of cannabis with a very low THC content – can be marketed in France.

Authorization of certain cannabinoid-based medicines

In addition, France has authorized the use of certain cannabinoid-based medicines since 2013. These include Sativex, an oral spray prescribed for the treatment of spasticity related to multiple sclerosis. However, this product is still not marketed due to a disagreement over its sale price between the competent authorities and the pharmaceutical company that produces it.

CBD and French social security

For a treatment to be covered by social security, it must be included on a list of reimbursable medicines. This inclusion depends on several criteria, including recognized therapeutic utility, economic interest for the community and compliance with good manufacturing practices.

Currently, no medicine containing only CBD is included on this list in France. Therefore, social security does not cover treatments based on CBD alone.

However, as mentioned previously, Sativex, which contains THC and CBD, is authorized in France under certain conditions. If this drug were to be marketed, it could be covered by social security.

Development prospects

Recognition of the potential therapeutic benefits of CBD could lead the French authorities to modify their position regarding its use. Indeed, many countries, such as Canada or Switzerland, have already adopted more permissive legislation regarding CBD and its medical prescription.

Scientific studies have demonstrated that the CBD may be effective in treating certain conditions, such as epilepsy, chronic pain, anxiety or even sleep disorders. Clinical trials are underway to evaluate the therapeutic benefit of cannabidiol, and it is possible that this substance will one day be recognized as a medicine in its own right and reimbursable by social security.

Current alternatives

Although CBD is not covered by social security, there are ways to obtain CBD legally and safely in France.

Buy CBD online

One of the most common options is to buy CBD online. Many online stores offer a varied range of CBD-based products, such as oils, capsules and even e-liquids for electronic cigarettes. These products are generally obtained from industrial hemp respecting French legislation.

  • Check legality: Before buying CBD online, it is advisable to check that the product complies with current regulations (THC content less than 0.2%).
  • Laboratory analysis: It is also recommended to choose products that have undergone laboratory testing to confirm their quality and CBD content.

Turn to alternative natural products

There are also other plants with relaxing or anxiolytic properties, which can be used as alternatives to CBD. For example :

  • Valerian: This herb has long been used for its calming effect and can help combat anxiety and sleep disorders.
  • St. John’s Wort: This plant has a mild antidepressant action and can be taken in the form of a food supplement.
  • Hawthorn: It has calming properties and is used to relieve heart palpitations and insomnia.

Finally, it is important to remember that the best way to treat a condition or symptom is to consult a health professional, who will be able to direct you towards the treatment adapted to your situation and your needs.
