CBD and Covid-19: is CBD cannabis really effective?

November 17, 2019. This is the date on which the first case of coronavirus disease 2019 was officially reported. Then hundreds, then thousands and now millions of people have tested positive, with more or less serious consequences. Obviously, the scientific community is on alert, taking action on all fronts to stop the pandemic: vaccines, basic and supportive treatments in particular. According to some researchers, cannabis in general and CBD in particular could help fight the Covid-19 pandemic. However, to this day, everything is based only on preliminary studies. What do we know, what research is in progress and what are the hopes? This is what we are talking about today.

CBD and Covid-19: promising studies ... but still at the preliminary stage

All avenues are good to study to halt the Covid-19 pandemic more quickly

To date, different studies seem to draw similar conclusions by referring to the potential of CBD in the fight against Covid-19. However, all are still at a preliminary stage and do not allow clear conclusions to be drawn. Carried out for the most part in the United States and Canada, they are based on theoretical models, have not yet been tested on humans or are based on findings that do not always follow precise scientific protocols. So this is encouraging, but all the results mentioned must still be cross-checked, confirmed by independent third parties and deepened by additional studies.

A brief overview of the trails to dig.

Can CBD Inhibit SARS-CoV-2 Infection?

American researchers, some working for the University of Illinois (Chicago) are testing the ability of CBD to inhibit the replication of SARS-CoV-2. Behind these technical terms, to say the least, there is a simple fact: CBD could reduce Covid-19 infection. Specifically, this implies that the CBD taken as a preventive measure could limit the risk of contracting the disease. Taken early enough after screening, it could also help to limit the extent of infection. This would be possible thanks to the ability of CBD and its metabolite (its version synthesized by the body), the 7-OH-CBD, to block the replication of the virus.

The findings of this study are currently being reviewed by the scientific community. In the meantime, the final report [link in English] is already available for reading. Be careful, therefore, CBD is to date in no way recognized to prevent Covid and is not, moreover, overall, not recognized as a treatment for anything in France.

Some CBD Cannabis Strains More Effective Against Covid?

Another study, this time Canadian, discusses theaction of CBD on ACE2, a key protein in the physiology of Covid-19. This property, if confirmed, could also suggest that cannabidiol may protect against (or at least slow down) coronavirus infection. More specifically, Canadian researchers put forward a dozen cannabis strains whose cannabidiol contents are particularly high, the cannabinoid being more useful for modulating the level of ACE2 proteins, involved in certain cardiovascular, pulmonary and renal functions.

Can CBD limit the damage caused by Covid-19 to the lungs?

This time, the study comes to us from Georgia, again in the United States. According to researchers from Medical College of Georgia (MCG), CBD is said to help reduce lung damage caused by Covid-19. How? 'Or' What ? By regulating the rate of apelin, a set of amino acids known since 1998 and studied in particular in the fight against type II diabetes. However, Covid patients in respiratory distress see their rate of apelin drop. By maintaining its level, CBD could therefore help limit inflammation. However, this is only an observation at this stage, requiring further study.

CBD to strengthen your immune system?

The studies mentioned at the beginning of the article should be taken with a grain of salt because they are still at a preliminary stage and not confirmed by third-party and independent researchers. If the results are confirmed, the door seems open to the possibility of taking advantage of the virtues of CBD to deal with Covid, in particular to limit the lung lesions that the coronavirus involves. On the other hand, it already seems reasonable to mention the virtuous properties of CBD, especially when it is associated with hemp oil, to strengthen his immune system. Hemp is indeed naturally rich in fatty acids (omega), antioxidants and vitamins that help strengthen the immune system, the main means of defense of our organism against external aggressions.

In summary: CBD is neither a drug nor an alternative to any other treatment or vaccine. On the other hand, it can potentially help your body to better arm itself.

There is therefore an interest in consuming CBD in order to better understand this unprecedented and global situation which has every reason to attack our mind.

One year after the start of the pandemic, the newspaper 20 minutes even asked several users who explained how CBD helps them endure the anxiety-provoking climate created by fear of the virus, the difficult economic situation linked to the exercise of certain professions and the limitation of social life.

Be careful, however, if you are on medication, especially for disorders related to anxiety or mental health in general. If you suffer from any pathology, So always talk about your willingness to take CBD to a healthcare worker before taking the plunge.
