Nowadays, the term Skunk passed into everyday language as synonymous with "cannabis", very often to name a powerful and good quality product. However, originally Skunk was a very specific subfamily that became so popular that it led to the development of many cult varieties. So, much more than yet another nickname for marijuana, the original Skunk has very particular characteristics. She might even be the mother of your favorite strain! What is Skunk cannabis ? This is what we see right away.
History of Skunk cannabis
As often with the main varieties of cannabis, we must go back to 1970 years and cross the Atlantic to find their origins. At the time, the cannabis market was booming in the USA. The country has also managed to remain one of the pioneers in terms of developing the cannabis market, that it is next to its cultivation, hybridization or commercialization. Black market as legal market are also concerned.
Our original Skunk therefore dates back to this time and more particularly to a happy hybridization between a Acapulco Gold, or Colombian Gold and Afghan. The Acapulco and the Colombian are of pure sativas. As their names suggest, they are both primitive strains native to Latin America, Mexico and the Colombian mountains respectively. On the contrary, Afghani is an indica, more prone to relaxation than to the excitement of her sisters.
From their union was born the original Skunk, now known worldwide under the name Skunk #1, but we'll get to that in a moment.
Skunk CBD: the cannabis legend that has become legal
With the development of the legal cannabis market in the 2000s, and in particular the massive arrival of products rich in cannabidiol (CBD) on the French market since 2018, a legal Skunk demand appeared. It must be said that in the United States in the 1970s, we were still a long way from the legalization of cannabis. The varieties created were then very often for their psychotropic effects, largely influenced by the THC content of plants.
Today, remember, a hemp plant can only be legal in Europe if its THC level is less than 0,3%. On the contrary, it is the richness in CBD that is therefore encouraged, since the molecule is legal and known for its soothing effects on the body.
It is therefore now entirely possible to obtain Legal Skunk, rich in CBD and almost devoid of THC. The varieties Nordle et Remedy are two examples of CBD indica strains direct descendant of Afghan Skunk.
Skunk: sativa effects for a cerebral high
Originally, Skunks are varieties that give pride of place to sativa influences of their origins. This earns them energizing effects, stimulating brain activity, creativity and therefore responsible for what we qualify in the jargon of high cerebral. Very stable, a Skunk can be grown with peace of mind, leaving little doubt as to the quality and effects of the next harvest.
In terms of aromas, any good Skunk is logically illustrated by these special scents that gave it its name. Skunk indeed means "skunk" in English, a small animal best known for the scents it gives off in the presence of enemies. Althoughheady, the smell of Skunk is however much more subtle when consumed, and is essential among consumers as a guarantee of quality. It is completed with notes of musk, spices, and even sweet.
Some famous Skunk strains
Sought after for the high dose of energy they provide, the Skunks follow each other, but are not all alike. In nearly five decades, many sub-varieties have emerged, with varying cannabinoid levels, as well as their aromas and effects.
How can we not first mention the variety that started it all? Skunk # 1 was born in late 1970s and is part of the family tree of all modern Skunk varieties, thus including the CBD Skunks. Its scents are distinguished by their acridity softened by earthy notes with the characteristic taste of cannabis. As an exceptional hybrid, the Skunk # 1 borrows the best of both worlds, by taking the calming side of indicas and boost of sativa energy.
La Lemon Skunk is a Skunk CBD soft and balanced which easily appeals to neophytes. Yet it is far from lacking in character, with very pronounced lemon notes, reinforced by woody aromas, eyeing the side of citron or sandalwood. 100% Skunk, she displays a perfect split between sativa and indica genetics. This gentle balance has notably earned it awards at international competitions, including the Spannabis Cup, organized in Spain.
Although its name is not very explicit as to its origins, theOrange Bud is theone of the most traditional and popular Skunk sub-varieties among consumers. With her extremely pure genetics, she owes her success to many elements. If we had to name just two, its strong energizing power and its both sweet and fruity scents would logically be at the top of the list. Entering the market in the 1980s, theOrange Bud is one of the cult varieties. It now exists in legal CBD version, for everyone's pleasure!
THEAmnesia arises from the cross between a Skunk No. 1 and Cinderella 99, a sativa-dominant hybrid strain also renowned for her potent high cerebral. It also sometimes borrows from the Jack Herrer, depending on the version. It is in any case particularly appreciated for its fruity flavors, reinforced with a hint of Pepper and minty freshness.
