In France, Crohn's disease affects approximately one person in a thousand. Often diagnosed in young adults (between 20 and 30 years old), it mainly attacks the digestive tract, causing inflammation in its path. It is currently not possible to treat it and, if drug and surgical treatments exist to control it, they sometimes lead to quite heavy side effects. the cannabidiol (CBD) being recognized for its anti-inflammatory effects and the absence of major side effects, the question of taking CBD against Crohn's disease arises legitimately.
CBD against Crohn's disease: where did the idea come from?
Crohn's disease is a inflammatory disease of the digestive tract. Particularly troublesome during flare-ups, it is also chronic, making it unpredictable. Specifically, this disorder is characterized by thickening and inflammation of the lining of the digestive tract, sometimes accompanied byulcers, cracks see even perforations. Each outbreak lasts up to a few weeks, with varying periods of remission (weeks or months, sometimes years).
Surprisingly, Crohn's disease is much more common in industrialized countries, especially since the 1950s. This suggests the importance of environmental factors. tabagisme is already recognized as an aggravating factor, but the importance of the diet could certainly also have an influence. However, the responsibility of the food we eat has not (yet?) been clearly demonstrated.
Crohn's disease symptoms
- Blood in stool
- Stomach pain (when it affects the large intestine)
- Pain in the lower sell, on the right side (when it settles at the end of the small intestine)
- Other inflammatory symptoms not affecting the digestive system (canker sores, joint pain, erythema nodosum, uveitis, inflammation of the bile ducts, vascular problems in particular).
- General damage to the quality of life of patients (fatigue, anxiety, depression, anemia, weight loss).
La ability of CBD to act on many of these symptoms is the main reason that pushes researchers and Crohn's patients to take a closer interest in it.
The effects of CBD to help Crohn's patients
We attribute many qualities to the CBD, however not always scientifically demonstrated. His ability to act against inflammation and therefore against pain, is on the other hand certainly the one of which we are most sure. So much so that there are CBD treatments for pain recognized, including in France. To date, they do not directly concern Crohn's disease, but prove that the scientific community and governments, even the most skeptical, recognize the CBD benefits against inflammation and pain.
More concretely, in the context of Crohn's disease, CBD could have the advantage of:
- Reduce inflammation causing Crohn's disease flare-ups.
- Limit abdominal pain caused by Crohn's disease or other IBD.
- Eliminate free radicals thanks to its antioxidant power, and so protect gastrointestinal tissues.
- Regulate intestinal motility the slowing down of which causes diarrhoea.
- Improve the overall quality of life of patients, in particular by limiting nausea andanxiety caused by disease.
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
Crohn's disease is one of the Inflammatory bowel diseases, or MICI. We also find under this same name the ulcerative colitis (or ulcerative colitis) as well as other inflammatory colitis, however rarer. Crohn's disease remains the most common since it represents 70% of IBD. In all, these are approximately 200 people who are concerned in France, all suffering, more or less intensely and at sometimes varied places in the digestive tract, from chronic inflammation of the digestive tract. Beyond Crohn's Disease, all IBD could thus benefit from the anti-inflammatory effects of CBD.
Can we really treat Crohn's disease with plants?
We mentioned it in the introduction, there is currently no no treatment, natural or not, to permanently cure Crohn's disease. Nevertheless, in addition to drug and surgical options, several plants seem to have a positive influence on the symptoms of the disease. They act mainly at two levels: stabilization of the digestive system and strengthening of the immune system more generally.
THEanise is one of the plants often cited to fight against Crohn's disease since its seeds loaded withanethole have a antispasmodic effect. It is also found in star anise, or star anise, which can be used in infusions to relieve the intestine.
Hemp, from which CBD is extracted, nevertheless has the advantage of being more complete. In fact, it allowsact both on digestion and on the rest of the body.
Which CBD to relieve Crohn's disease?
There are dozens of different CBD products. In the context of Crohn's disease, it is preferable to favor a derivative of good quality, without THC and allowing a healthy way of taking. So avoid CBD e-liquids and prefer theCBD oil and hemp infusions. Products containing CBDA may also be of interest due to the cannabinoid's ability to reduce vomiting and nausea. If in doubt, our dedicated guide explains in detail how finding the right dosage of CBD for your particular needs.
Warning: taking CBD in the context of Crohn's disease does not in any way replace personalized medical monitoring, nor any conventional treatment prescribed by a doctor. CBD is not recognized as a treatment in France and must therefore be considered for what it is: a natural product capable of improving daily life.
